Hawaii has the fewest young homeowners in the country, according to an analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data by Agent Advice, a real estate media organization. After crunching the numbers on people between the ages of 15 and 34, it concluded that in Hawaii only 1.49% of the population in that age group own their homes, followed by California (1.58%) and New York (1.92%). New Jersey ranked fourth on this list, with 2.15% of the population being young homeowners — or 199,204, 27,781 of whom have paid off their mortgages.
“As more young people attempt to get into the property market, it’s evident that some areas prove a lot harder to get on the ladder. The leading states likely have fewer young homeowners because of steep prices due to popular demand, so it’s understandable that young first-time buyers are gravitating towards more affordable states,” said Chris Heller.
